From a covid renovation project to our own paradise: the story behind Epic Mood Estate

On 23 June 2020 — right in the middle of the covid era, face masks and all — we, Pieter and Flos, signed our names to a Portuguese adventure. What began on paper as the search for a charming fixer-upper grew into a wonderfully sprawling renovation project. The result? A breathtaking, luxurious Estate in the Algarve that we now get to enjoy every single day. And from now on, we're delighted to share that joy with you.

A vision hidden behind a rusty gate. Pieter had spotted the property online a year earlier and was hooked instantly. It was a former fish-processing factory in the characterful village of Estômbar, made up of three adjoining workers' cottages, an outbuilding and a huge 2,000 m² plot. Back then it took a serious dose of positive thinking — and an incredibly creative mind — to see its potential, but luckily Pieter is blessed with both. With his 'Flossie' fully behind him, we took the leap.

Blood, sweat and Hague grit. In the early years we were both still working in The Hague, using every holiday to fly out to Portugal as often as we could. We worked incredibly hard, tackling everything we possibly could with our own two hands.

During this process, our two worlds came together perfectly: Pieter poured his creativity into the striking outdoor design and architecture of the Estate, while Flos brought the interiors to life, striking the perfect balance between warmth, cosiness and high-end luxury.

Togetherness, cooking and the ultimate 'Epic Moods'. The main house has grown into a wonderfully spacious, stylish and luxurious family home. One of our biggest wishes was a huge open-plan kitchen — a nod to Flos's great passion for elaborate cooking and long evenings around the table with good company. The former outbuilding, meanwhile, has been transformed into a beautiful guesthouse for rental, so guests can enjoy this unique oasis of calm in complete privacy, just 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean.

After years of hard graft, we've fully embraced the relaxed Portuguese way of life. For us, Epic Mood Estate is the ultimate definition of an Epic Mood: a feeling of pure euphoria, choosing adventure, and celebrating the moments you'll never forget.

Pieter & Flos – Your Hosts (for individual suite bookings)

We believe happiness grows when you share it. When our suites — Suite Yucca, Suite Oliveira and the spacious Residence — are rented individually, we're your hosts.

For us, B&B doesn't stand for Bed & Breakfast, but Bed & Drinks! As our philosophy goes: "Happiness is measured in the things you do and how you feel." A spontaneous drink and good conversation is, for us, the ultimate definition of an epic moment.

Judith – Your Point of Contact (for whole-estate bookings)

Choosing the ultimate luxury of hiring the entire Estate exclusively, with a large group or family? Then we happily hand the keys over to Judith. She's your welcoming host on the ground — greeting you personally at check-in and seeing you off at check-out. In between, you'll enjoy complete privacy and peace and quiet, while Judith is on hand for any questions or emergencies.

Vitor – Our Pool Hero

What's a luxury Estate in the Algarve without a beautiful pool? Meet Vitor, our dedicated pool hero. He visits twice a week to keep our saltwater pool looking spectacular, taking care of maintenance with a friendly Portuguese smile — so you can carry on relaxing without a care in the world.

For anyone unfamiliar with saltwater pools: they don't taste anything like the sea — instead, they're wonderfully fresh, gentle on the skin and beautifully cooling in the Portuguese climate.
